Thank you for the response. AA = anti-aliasing, right? Do you recall the issue? I went in game and turned anit-aliasing off and set the resolution to Desktop, which did not change anything.

Installed the game (via Impulse and then Steam) on a Vista machine and it seems to work fine except that all the map except a little around the margins is white. The other screen elements, menus etc. and the minimap are functional, but the map is featureless white except a green fringe. This is in both the tutorial and a new game. Essentially, I am blind as to actually playing. Did a Windows Update for optional items, changed resolutions for the screen and in game
Thanks for the responses. I secured my first alliance with the Jessuins after the Andians were gobbled up and the Altarians declared war on the Jessuins, who asked me as their main trading partner for help. I bribed the Altarians to make peace and build up the Jessuins (more pop, more trade) and took the alliance option when available. The Altarians have not declared war on them again. The second alliance was the result of using the Dren
Now that I have an Ally, what does that mean? What benefits and disadvantages? Are we mutually obligated to go to war if the other is attacked? Does an Alliance affect the attitude of the other AIs (discourage them maybe)? Any reason not to be allied with two players that hate each other? If so, is their only option then to attack each other and break the alliance? Thanks for your help. </font
Thanks for the answers, and the horrifying "what if" picture. I was rotating the ship with the mouse buttons but I found the button to toggle hardpoints and now I get it, although the placement on the hard points has to be rather exact which is why my prior clicking on the ship generically was not cutting it.
There is no "Place" option for nonfunctional design elements like there is for functional ones. I assumed there was another way to make them stick - left clicking, right clicking, double clicking, clicking on the ship, double clickng on the ship, etc. but they all come "loose." Is this working as intended or something I am missing? Thanks for your help
Different question - how do I get the decorative elements to "stick.? I double click and they appear on the model, but there i no PLACE button available and they come loose when I try to do anything else (like add other components). Thanks.
