PSList (part of sysinternals pstools) will output process list via command line. I'm having this issue, despite having shutdown every process that I could without getting into services. The notable exceptions are ATI's catalyst processes and AVG's processes. Here is the list: Name Pi

You could try deleting the candidate XML file from the Candidates folder. It's at: \My Games\PolMachine2008\Candidates There is a file in there with the same name as your candidate. If you delete it, perhaps your candidate will go away. There's also a candidate related file in the Config directory. I believe this one controls their appearance. Deleting it may or may not be necessary. -KnightAV
The OP sounds like he is speaking more out of frustration than anything else. In his defense, there are/were a number of painful bugs at launch that made the game difficult to approach. Through some artful hacking of both my candidate file and my opponent's candidate file, I managed to get all the starting stances correct (party value + candidate value) and dodged the "your stance on an issue resets the first time any action affects its value" bug. It was only simple difficult
Democratic Default Issue Stances [code="xml"] 35 15 45 35 -35 15 40 10 -35 -20 25 10 10 15 <ENVIRO
In case anyone is looking for workarounds for the bug where issue stance resets after you make speeches or put out ads, I've got the Republican party defaults saved. If you set your character with these numbers, your candidate's issue stances will respond properly to change. However, the computer candidate will still be suffering from the bug so unless you want a really easy game you will need to doctor their stances too. Republican Default Issue Stances [code="xml"]<
Maxpower is a much more careful tester than me. I checked out his findings and they look accurate for the current build. I've got one extra data point for your analysis. If you put 1 point in every issue, restart, and play a campaign, you will start with 1's in everything. So any personal stance you start with will override the starting party stance completely. This might not be a bug, but it's related. -KnightAV
This appears to be fixed in version 1.02.024 which is on Impulse now. I checked both a Republican custom and a Democrat custom candidate and saw issue stances across the board. Hooray and thanks! -KnightAV
I tested this out of curiosity. Here's what happened: Starting value for High Gas Prices: -25 After TV Ad AGAINST High Gas Prices: -18 Next week: -19 Next week: -20 So I would conclude that the known bug is the only one at work here. -KnightAV
Sorry to post so much, I was just worried about it getting lost in other threads so I wanted to post it somewhere unambiguous. Thanks!
When starting a new game as a custom candidate, that candidate's initial issue situation is defined only by the 100 point pool they set at candidate creation. To test, I created a new candidate called "Test Guy" and gave him 50 points in Withdrawing from Iraq and 50 points in Improving the economy. As you can see in this screenshot, those are the only two things affecting his issues. His opponent, Mr. Grant, has a full battery of stances on many issues. <P
Try playing with a non-custom candidate and you will see a big difference. I think there is a bug where custom candidates do not receive the benefit of association with their chosen party. McCain technically only has 2 issues set at the beginning also. War in Iraq (-90) and Immigration (-1). The rest of his issue status is derived from his party. If custom candidates were receiving the benefit of their party's platform, you would see a much more level playing
Are you using a custom candidate or one of the pre-defined characters? -KnightAV
Ok, I think I can nail down the problem more specifically. Custom candidates are not receiving the benefits of their party's positions. When I start a campaign with a custom candidate, and view the state issues in my starting state, I have a column of 5's except where I put points for issues during candidate creation. When I start a campaign with a predefined candidate, I have a vast array of 2 digit numbers ranging from 20-50 on the issues in my starting state. <b
I agree that the current situation with initial distribution of issue stances seems a little bit imbalanced. However, instead of players getting unlimited, how about just giving the opponent 100 also (or perhaps a sliding scale based on difficulty setting)? I think its more interesting and realistic for candidates to develop their stances over the course of the game rather than start out completely set on all issues. Right now it feels like you are just trying to cat
