Actually, free capital ships can be limited via research prerequisites. Yeah, it may be your free capital, however you opponent has at least 2 Lvl 5's at that point, plus a fairly sizable fleet to boot. This is of course dependant on what tier it is at. Tier 8 Warfare + costly research + massive supply = risky to have a free SSD.
It isn't just balancing issues I'm wondering about. What about size?
Now, I love Star Wars, but I'm not IN love with Star Wars, if you catch my drift, so I only know what the movies, games, and occassional Wookiepedia search have told me. So I'm not entirely sure as to the size ratio between an ISS and a planet, an ISS and a SSD, and an SSD to a planet.
However, I did just think of one other thing:
The Death Star.
We could put it in the Cruiser's section and make it rediculously expensive, or make it stationary and have it be like the Novelaith (sp?) cannon for the TEC, or something like that.
Hell, why not do that with an SSD? If we could solve both balancing and scaling issues, why not put it in Cruisers rather than Capitol ships and make it amazingly expensive?
Well an SSD requiring expensive Tier 8 research to unlock isn't something you will be bringing out mid-game, and would be a gamebreaker for the Empire. Sorta like ManSh00ter's Xin Titans. Something you bring out when the enemy is all turtled up. And no, making an SSD or the Death Star a tactical platform defeats the purpose of both as MOBILE battlestations.
Hence why its called a "test"
Then what we could do as a detterence for SSDs could be this: Allow the TEC and Visari supergun the ability to target the SSD, if that's possible.
Also, sorry if I was unclear before; i had no intention of suggesting an SSD as an orbital platform. My bad.
Besides, I'm not suggesting making the SSD invncible, as a massive armada should be able to destroy it, in addition to some sort of counter-SSD ship for the rebels.
Speaking of rebels, how're they coming Eville? If you don't mind me asking, that is.
The problem with doing that with the Death Star or a SSD is that it wouldn't limit the number of them that you can build. If you are late enough in the game to build one, you can probably build a couple pretty quickly. Then you would run into entire fleets made out of Death Stars and SSDs, and that would be hard to balance. Plus, if they were "cruisers," then they aren't even limited by the capital ship max of 16. Which would mean you would have to give the Death Star and SSD super massive fleet caps, but that would limit the size of the normal fleet too much.
Well in 1.1 the cap ship limit is moved to 9, just like frigates and cruisers are. So more capital ships soon as the tools for 1.1 are releaed. And the Rebels have the Viscount as an anti-SSD ship.
Anyways, the whole fun of being the Empire is taking your Star Destroyers and steamrollering people. They aren't exactly known for subtle tactics. And to be honest, it ain't the Empire without at least one type of SSD.
I agree with Spardason. To be honest the rebels were always outgunned and on the run. As far as I know the ssd reigned supreme and should in game. It should be very slow and easily ambushed. The rebels would need a large fleet to destroy one. Now as the empire you would have 2 options. 1 use the ssd as a fleet by itself ( it would be vulnerable) or 2 group a defense group which would combine a large portion of your fleet and make it very slow. While the rebellion would be able to blitzkrieg your defenseless planets. If EJ balances out the fleet caps between the 2 it should not be that unbalanced as a whole. It just means the rebels would not have any 1 ship able to go toe to toe with a ssd which would be cannon.
I don't think Eville is doing the Rebellion as just the Rebellion. I think it is going to be the Rebellion/New Republic versus the Empire.
I know that's the purpose of the Empire, and I would like to play like that, too, but the problem is that there would be no reason to play as the Rebellion/New Republic. What I'm afraid will happen if you put in the SSD is that you will end up with something like Empire at War. The Empire had the Executor that took forever to kill and could spawn un-ending armies of TIEs, plus they had the Death Star that would kill any capital ship the Rebels dared send into battle. I don't want to see something similar happen to this mod. Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to have a SSD, but I just think that it would be too unbalanced, Viscount or not.
Well, a SSD will either be a fleet by itself or with a fleet. If with a fleet, chances are the fleet will be taking up massive supply, plus take a very long time to construct during which the Rebels/NR can raid the Empire's shipyards. And a lot of worlds will be undefended, allowing the Rebels/NR to hype in some Mon Cal cruisers and smash things/bomb planets. So a lone SSD will be vulnerable to a fleet, and a SSD with a fleet will leave worlds undefended and ripe for the taking. Either way, a SSD is a big risk for the Empire if not done right.
k-wings. anti-capital ship bombers... a few squadrons could cripple an SSD if they had adequate anti-fighter support if im not mistaken
I cant find the dl for this. When I go to the site I only see dl for hw2? I personally think EJ has a plan for this mod and I bet ssd will be in it. Personally I could live without the DS. I think EJ will make things reasonably balanced. At any rate SPardason is right and goes along with what i was saying. The rebels may have the same amount of power as a whole just not all in one spot at one time and a hecka lot faster. Thats what the ssd represents. A whole lot of slow power in one spot. That was one of the purposes for the ssd was instill fear in the sheer size and power it brings. If the empire chooses to build one it gives up in a defensive way as it is slower than smaller ships. Sure it would be very difficult to stop but if the ssd went on capturing your worlds the rebel fleet could capture more worlds in the same amount of time.
please help me here i got the mod and not just this one the 7 deadly sins too but every time i load the near the end i hear a woosh and it stops and i have to boot my comp. whyy is it doing this.
please respond
I'm back, though having some issues with the computer so modding is on hold at this time (no data loss, just OS being stupid and video card catching on fire) this weekend I should have everything straightened out and start trying to rebalance the empire to the new republic ships
about the SSD, yes it will be in, yes it will be very powerful, but it will be defeatable.
The first stage of the rebalance will be to make the cost of vessels directly proportional to their offense and defense and then make an attempt at adjusting the pricing by other attributes(support, acceleration, etc) and abilities.
Will the vanilla Sins races be in the mod? And thank you, EvilleJedi for the update.
I doubt it. After all, a Star Destroyer is about 5x the size of a Kol, and a SSD is 10x bigger than that. A Kol is about the size of a Star Wars Nebulon B frigate, quite possibly the most spammed ship in Star Wars canon. So the vanilla races would be screwed.
Nah Tie Fighters are
Video card catching on fire! Thats awesome lol. Never heard that one. Do you overclock it?
Yeah, TIE fighters are spammed like crazy. However, if its an actual combat ship you want and not a fighter, hard to beat the Nebulon B when it comes to spamming. Corellian Corvettes and Gunships aren't meant for fleet battles. Same with any corvette.
What kind of star destroyer are you using? Imperator? Imperial II? Victory? Eclipse? or are you using all of them?
So far he has the ISD I and II as well as the Victory I. I don't think the Venator is *technically* an actual Star Destroyer. Not enough firepower by Star Destroyer standards. And Eville plans to cram in all the capships he can. So chances are we will see the Victory II, as well as the Eclipse, Sovereign, and Exectuor class SSD's. And have one slot left over. 1.1 supports 9 capital ship slots..
awesome.
Great Mod Eville Jedi..i just sign up just to thank u for bringing this mod in and all the excellent work u did..the ship models is so extremely way2 too detailed for a modder....ur skills are unrivalled...my fav cap ship the Venator looks great and so so much better than the shitty EAW models...gudluck again! Cant wait for this mod to finished! Hope u reconsider in bringing in the Clone Wars ships in near future. CIS has many ships too such as those in the opening battle over coruscant in EP III..that cud make a gud war!
