Here's an interesting article talking about the quiet adoption of multicasting recently. I think if a game developer got on this they could produce a killer networking stack.. http://www.whetten.net/documents/press%20clippings/Multicast%20article%20for%20TTW-edit2.doc

With regard to ISP multicast support, isn't it possible to tunnel a user's connection to a server that is on the mbone? If that's possible, then the proxy servers put in place could act as endpoints for these tunnels.

Well there is a possibility that someone's router may not support multi-cast, but most do, and I would think a large portion of the internet backbone's ip stack recognizes it. I can't say for sure how pervasive it is, but I think it would be worth investigating.I think that before a game is launched a quick network diagnostic should be performed. 1. A tcp connection could be opened between all participants tp facilitate reliable communication during the diagnostic.

Looking at the estimated required upstream bandwidths: 1 vs. 1: ~24 kbps 2 vs. 2: ~64 kbps 3 vs. 3: ~105 kbps 4 vs. 4: ~145 kbps 5 vs. 5: ~186 kbps it appears as though there is no multicasting being performed at the network layer. Assuming all players are being sent the same data from a player's machine, it is not necessary to send it from a computer multiple times. Using multicasting, http://en.wikipedia.org/wi

I've played 3v3 pantheon games without issues, occassionally 4v4. Same thing in custom. I posted details of my router and crash logs in the ' We are here to help! ' thread. I did notice the following in the log each time the custom game starts: [07-17-2009 11:46:04 646] Ready to try and connect. [07-17-2009 11:46:04 646] CVPOnPlayerDataUpdatedCallback Yo

I think there's more to it in custom games than just geography. I join games that are titled as being geographically close to me, and in the lobby my pings to other users are quite low, often Somehow the custom games also manage to totally trash my internet connection. When I alt-tab out during a custom game I find that I cannot browse to any web pages, my msn has disconnected.. Basically nothi

I made a post in the ' We are here to help! thread reporting my inability to connect to custom games. Basically I can connect to customs, but my ping spikes to 3000+. Pantheon games work fine, and so does every other network application on this computer. I haven't gotten any sort of feedback in that thread so I thought I'd post here. Anyone else having this custom games problem?<

I found that port forwarding '6073' for UDP through fixed my problem. You should update the intro to include this when you mention port forwarding! EDIT: I can only play pantheon games. I just tried a custom game and again I got bitched out because my ping spikes to 3000+. Something horrible is happening, as all internet apps fail when this happens. MSN gets disconnected, my streaming music stops, websites don't respond. These things all work fine while playing

1. Open ports 6112 to 6200 on your router and point them to the PC IP address you're playing on. This isn't generally necessary but it can help. Done 2. Make sure you don't have some firewall blocking out Demigod. Some router firewalls prevent UDP traffic from getting through. Done 3. Have you tried the parameter /serverproxyonly in the Demigod shortcut a

I think it might help the developers a lot of they include a 'complain' button during the stages of connection. If I am waiting like a minute to try and connect to people, or whatever I deem to be unacceptable performance, I should be able to click a button, write a comment, and have all technical history of my current connection attempts sent to Stardock for analysis. Do it up!

I have a concern with Frogboy that may be totally unfounded, but it's a concern nonetheless. In one of the videos he posted recently he repeatedly states that he's convinced the proxy servers are the solution to the connection issues; that he has a good feeling about that. He also mentions a few times that all the technical stuff is over his head. This reminds me way too much of a software gig I had. The product was essentially broken and needed to have major parts rewritten, but mana

Wouldn't it be nice to have icons in the corner for everyone on your team so that you could cast abilities on them without having to click them in the crowd? Take it a step further and implement HUD like you did for SINS, showing all the mob's health, buildings, etc.. Present all information along the left of the screen, would make it much easier to see what's going on large scale.

Putting up some sort of developer blog where you respond to feedback from the player community is invaluable. If it stays as a post in these forums that's cool too. People love hearing what's coming next and they love being heard by you. Keep it up!

Yeah bots shouldn't be in there.. I'd like it if they had some sort of drop-tracking, to match non-droppers with non-droppers. Force you to keep up a good reputation for finishing your games.

Reply to Random Demigod in Demigod

I think that all pantheon games should be forced random. Who's with me?

While connecting to other players pre-pantheon game, there was no progress being made. I opened the connection details, there were 8 of us, only a couple connected to each other, and nothing changed for a minute. I'd love to know the technical issues behind it as I'm a computer engineer with lots of networking experience!

I'm loving the game, but I wish I could maintain relationships with people I've played with. There should at least be options to add to a friend's list. Once I've got some friend's going, it would be nice to have arranged team ranked matches ala warcraft 3. Thoughts?
