Don't be afraid to play a lot of AI games to get the hang of things... Do all hard + one nightmare to start and work up skills there... Learn the items and strats that work for you there and adapt them to playing people...

Blade of the Serpent is awesome for so many reasons ...and so is staff of renewal for other reasons... When playing with Blade of the Serpent...you don't ever need to buy mana items early (though later you can to give yourself a biger tank of gas for abilities) You can stack HP and gloves and do some serious damage.. One of rooks big keys is the rings that have lifetaps on them.. one is available at 1750 gold and one at 4000... both yield impressive results for increasing his ability to stay in lane..
One of the best counters to generals is to upgrade creeps...especially v Sedna and Oak...
