Okay. Should I try to colonize as many planets as possible? Only colonize planets with ratings above a certain number (15 seems to be what the manual says is the cut off for a "good" planet, but I have habitable worlds set to "uncommon", so there aren't too many of those)? What tech advances allow you to raise the rating (other than Soil Enhancement)? So far, my biggest problem seems to be that the computer's populations are totally out of whack compared to mine, even though I seem t

Is there any easy way to judge the value of a trade you are offering the AI players? I have been hesitant to get involved in much diplomacy so far in the game because I don't really have a good feel for what is a good deal or what the computer will take, so every time I make a deal, I get the feeling that the computer is taking me for a ride. Is there going to be an "estimated value" readout on the diplomacy screen somewhere so I can guesstimate about how much I need to offer to make a fair de

I just got the beta this weekend, and I've been getting my butt kicked (except for one game where I won a cultural victory and I'm not sure how). Does anyone have any general strategy hints or pages where I can find them? I would like to at least be able to defend myself, but it seems like the computer can always outgun me.

I do have one question about balance -- I just started playing this weekend, so I am probably just not playing very well, but it seems like the computer can always outproduce me and that their population and production grows like crazy, even when I put a significant amount in social development. Normally, I would just assume that I suck, but it also seems like there is some sort of balance problem between the computer players -- one computer will start crushing its neighbors, and quickl

I've had a weird bug in the games I have been playing. I just bought the game over the weekend, and in almost every game I've played so far, someone will get attacked (usually the Torians) and then send me a message saying that I must join in battle with them or end our alliance. The problem is that I've never signed an alliance with them! I don't think I even _talked_ to them before they sent me this message in a couple games, which makes it very frustrating for me to figure this out

Argh. I preordered GalCiv, and downloaded the DGM, then tried to download GalCiv, but I can't figure out what the "serial number" is that it wants. It doesn't seem to be my order number, or the Item number, and I can't find anything else in the email I got sent to put in there. Was it in the webpage it gave me after I ordered? I thought that was all emailed to me (and when the computer rebooted after installing DGM, I lost it :(). Am I missing something or am I just being stupid? :(
