If you want to try out the 1.03 patch, but want the option to go back to a previous version, why not archive your existing version before you patch? Software menubar button, Drengin.net tab, right-click on Galactic Civ, hover above Archive, sub-menu Selected App (or Selected App & Extras (which is all the multi-media and such (if you have downloaded it))), and away you go. The full archive with everything downloaded is around 450M, just GalCiv itself is around 80M. When you de

Running the windowed GalCiv, 1.01a.011, if the Setup\Menu_Open.bik movie is not present you cannot click on any of the opening menu buttons. The I-League random event does nothing if there are no minor races. :)
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION I find these two lines in my crash log as well, and not just in GalCiv. Verify you have (latest/stablest) video drivers for your video card, since the trace log indicates some crashes within DDRAW.DLL, which is DirectX fluff. The crashes in KERNEL32.DLL are something within GalCiv itself. I have been somewhat annoyed with an immediate crash to the desktop on occasion with GalC
For fun and amusement, I also tried installing into an emulated W2K environment, with the same results (black screen, no movies, nothing). This was the 1.01a.032. Installed StarDock first, restored from archive (base software -- thanks for this feature! Download at 56k would have been painful.), start application. Changes resolution (640x480 to 1024x768), then locks up. Any suggestions? ~SDC~
I had four good planets in my sector, but due to mismanagement on my part two of them defected early on (accidentally colonized the 1 planet instead of the 14 planet by mis-click). Notwithstanding the error, I continued on my merry way, intending to woo them back with my cultural trinkets. ("Ooh, an interstellar waterpark! Those Terrans are so... creative!") It took not one, not two, but three fully culturalized starbases before one planet defected back to the fold. A fourth
Has anyone had success getting GalCiv to run in an emulated environment? I installed the base GalCiv in a Virtual PC 5 (PC and Mac) Win 98 / DirectX 8.1 system, and it will not run. Stardock runs fine, but when I start the application (full-screen or windowed), it changes resolutions but then hangs the machine at a black screen. No intro movie, no menu screen. Trying to end task does not work. The graphics for Virtual PC is emulated S3, and every resolution and color depth y
I would second the auto-cash option. When trading, I spend the most time tinkering with the cash and influence amounts and months to get an acceptable trade. I would add that I prefer cash over a period of time, rather than lump sum. I don't know if the opponents give more net cash as a lump, or over time; but I do know "buy now" items cost lots more over time. An auto-calculate for the amount would remove a bit of the tedium spent getting the absolute maximum value out of a
There was a thread below here with was Suggested list of changes started by IBNobody with several suggestions already present. When I found a probe early in the game, at the end of each turn the cursor would focus on the probe, even when I was clicked on my scout ship before I hit the turn button. Other loss of focus issues similarly occurred through the game. Also in my game, one AI built at least 60 Corsairs to attack the Space Sharks. Since my probe was nearby, I got to wa
I had started a thread called Bug Reporting lower than here. It has a couple already in it. I'll post future bug reports to this thread. ~SDC~
Another on SDC 0.99c.145... (cosmetic, not C&B) Software tab at top, Drengin.net tab. [Registered for full Drengin]. Sort by name, highlight Stellar Frontier, right-click on Drengin.net tab and refresh. Parts of the GalCiv install appear below Stellar Frontier. Other combinations possible. Also on the list of software, highlight any item and use the up and down arrows to move the highlighted line. The items auto-expand, but the highlight jumps around erratically. I was u
So, as we find bugs or typos in the program, where shall we report them? For example, from the Options screen, click the question mark next to Alliance Victory, and find "For[m] alliances with all [of] the major races..." ~SDC~
In my first game (yay Drengin.net!), I spent most of the latter half trading technologies with the minor races for easy monthly payments. It really did help the cash flow, although I don't know if it contributed to any winning scenario. The whole game was plagued with space sharks (from three turns in!), and it was nigh impossible to set up trade routes (tiny map). ~SDC~
On W2K, I was also missing NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM and boot.ini after SDC 0.99; copied NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from my \I386, but no backup of boot.ini. Good thing I don't reboot every day. ~SDC~
I had bought DGM about a week ago, and from it installed Stardock Central 0.90. SDC found my Drengin downloaded games and offered to update them (after the update from tonight, previous versions of SDC wouldn't log me in). I will admit having both was somewhat confusing. Glad the standard going forward is Stardock Central. ~SDC~
