They've definitely gone Here's an extract from a v1.02 GCTech.tech //------------------------------------------------------------------------ TECH 83 NearOmnipotence //------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name "Near Omnipotence" Model "" Tech_Requirement "NearOmnicience" Research_Cost 94430 Overview "W

I have never *ever* researched photons. Reasons: 1. It's a tech offering absolutely nothing. 2. It's a bridge to the Corvette cul-de-sac tech. I don't think I've ever built a corvette (got a few from anomolies though). Mind you, the AIs love to built corvettes and my frigates love to destroy corvettes so maybe I'll go for the Stellar Artois tech. ~SDC~

You say that you're either unlucky or the game's flawed. It's your gameplan that's flawed. I'm hardly a great strategy gamer but I can give a bunch of Intelligent AIs a damn good thrashing - sometimes :) The most important thing in the first few years is to keep you population's morale at 100%. 100% morale doubles your population growth, so every turn, adjust your tax rate just high enough to keep morale on all your planets at maximum. You're going to lose mo

I think we all agree that the +15 PQ ability was a must pick for the player. If I were to be trying to find ways to enchance the AI's behaviour, the first thing I would do would be to hard-code them to take the PQ ability. Not doing this would be deliberately handicapping them. Net result of everyone going for PQ is that all planets are equally attractive to both human and computer players, there's just more of them to grab. The abundance of good planets would slightly

Toaddog, I agree with you that cheat codes and level jumps are important in campaign games like AoE or C&C. Getting stuck on an early map is effectively locking you out from the storyline and setpiece gameplay of later levels. I find GalCiv games to be more like the melee modes of the RTSs. I just don't see how pressing +G enough times to increase your treasury to MAXINT makes a melee game more interesting. ~SDC~

Toaddog, the PQ cheese was very smelly and had to be thrown in the bin. It gave the player an effective monopoly on class 14 planet systems (and there's usually quite a few of them around) which could be bagged at his/her leisure without the threat of the AI getting there first. What makes Galactic Civilizations such an interesting game IMHO is that a particular planet or resource is desired by *all* races. This creates the conflict which fuels the gameplay. I'm bugger

My one page tech tree I announced in a thread last week will be ready by the end of this week (honest :)). A sneak preview is available here: http://www.jeffjam.dsl.pipex.com/ There'll be a colour version for you lucky people with fancy printers and a grayscale diagram for the rest of us. ~SDC~

Bah, 400 points for my first painful victory. I had to work my arse off for that win and all I got was a lousy 400 points (:( Still, who cares - I'm the 400th best Gal Civ player in the world :D ~SDC~

Scoring is pretty well broken. Look at your own scores - You got 1200 points for a win at challenging in a huge galaxy and only 800 for a crippling victory in a medium galaxy. Your win at crippling victory is far more impressive than your huge galaxy win, yet scores 50% less points. I've seen wins scoring thousands of points with simple AIs in huge galaxies. ~SDC~

I'm using 1.02.041. (upgraded to 1.02.042 a few minutes ago - I'll see if this still works) To make things a bit clearer: Me - Do you want Propulsion Tech for 100BC Them - Nope. Me - Alright, how about Cold Fusion for 100BC Them - I don't want that crap. Me - Would Propulsion Tech and Cold Fusion at 100BC/month for the next 5 months interest you? Them - Yeah Yeah Yeah! ~SDC~

In my current game (on painful difficulty - that's an understatement), both the Torians and the Alexians have refused 100BC for either cold fusion or propulsion, but I've managed to extact 100BC for 5 months when I've offered both techs together. Any ideas why they did this? ~SDC~

I've put up a couple of preview shots of my tech tree here: http://www.jeffjam.dsl.pipex.com/ The basic layout is more or less complete so there's just some tweaking and error checking to do. I hope to have it finished by the weekend... ...as long as my next game's not in a huge galaxy ;) ~SDC~

I'm putting the finishing touches to my Tech Tree diagram and hope to make it available in the next few days - assuming I can stop playing the game. It prints out fine on one page of A4 (even on my crappy dot-matrix printer) and includes all improvements, wonders, and ability enhancements for each tech. ~SDC~

I don't believe it should be possible for *any* victory with low intelligent AIs be able to beat a score with superior opponents - if you want to beat the top Metaverse players, you'd better play by the same rules! If some uber-player manages to win with all players set to 'Incredible', he should be at number 1 - no arguments. Hopefully this would encourage people to keep climbing the difficulty ladder instead of relying on munchkin "keeping a defeated AI alive until there's a
