Ah ha! I upgraded to GC AP v1.52b.013 and it seems now to work fine. You might try upgrading.

I had this same experience... I set up a game with each race's starting world set at 44 (including human). To try to get to the later tech stages of the game, I figured I'd give everyone a great starting position. Unfortunately I die when updating the first turn by military defeat. And to answer CariElf's question, yes. I selected both race and homeworld for starting positions.
