I agree with all mentioned. The average age of the gamer, the wonderful support, the kick-butt game dynamics, the empires, all add to a very rich web community that expresses itself very well. If I may, i relate our community to America in the 1700s where most citizens were quite active in politics and their community (at least this is what i've read). Because of this great community I and others have done alot of extra work, building mods, docs, etc. I've never done this for a game before (

I'd love a non-free XP. I've been advocating that since GC:EU was announced. I think we all have feature that would love to make it into such a pack, and this has been posted ad nasium. I'm not sure two AIs will really bring much into the game unless you added more diverestity within the game. I mean, there are only so many ways to differentiate the AI, and i think they are all as diverse as can be. I would focus more on features to enhance the game, such as fleets, designable ships, tactic
I would mention tech whoring - selling your techs. Get in the habit of visiting each AI (especially the minor civs) every couple of tech advancements. Also try not to pick a tech to research that the AI already has, pick another one. Then, trade this tech for the one you don't have. You can get 5 techs for one tech that you have on lower difficulties. Also the payments from selling your techs allows your production to be at 100% for at least half the game, until you get the battleships. <b
Does the fact that the AI turns are asynchronous to the human player turns help at all? This is what I think is happening: While you are doing your turns, the AI are doing theirs. I am not sure what the order of this is, but it could be that they are just compressing their turns while you are not. Ie: YOU |==============turn 1=======||========== turn 2=======| THEM |======================turn 1 || turn 2==============| Just a thought.
This is another great idea by Brad, and it's clear he's thought alot about it. However I ask the logistics idea should be expanded upon further. But first let me get out of the way my wish list. 1) Ship design, a la space empires III /IV. This would be a huge improvement in the game. You can easily incorporate missiles, new techs, etc. This would then beg the question, do you want tactical combat like MOO or do you want strategic combat like we have now. If the later, then it's
Just thought i'd drop in and say hi. I see the XP isn't out yet, sigh. I'll be patient :) I haven't played any recently, i've been waiting for the XP. Glad to see teh Fellowship is still kicking and in 1st, esp since GROSS has #2-#6 slots on the top players list. Anyway gotta run :)
Uhmm confession! I've been playing Rise of Nations (RON). Its a nice game, along the lines of the Age of... series, and more closely aligned to Empire Earth, which I just loved. It's got a few new twists but basically it's a RTS game ala Warcraft/C&C. Still, it's fairly fun but I think i'll tire of it quickly. Then back to GalCiv. I left this thread 3-4 days ago and now 5 pages have gone by :) And our score has increased alot. Way to go team! Love the story submissions. I dont' think i
Drengins: Tough initially, esp if you play good. No problem once you make it to dreadnaught. Alterian: Very tough on evil players, will declare war without hesitiation if they are ahead (even slightly) militarily. Torian: My favorites. Very peaceful unless provoked. Tend to be good traders and researchers. Almost always ally with Alterians. If you wipe out the Alterians you can ally with the Torians if you are evil. Or if you are good a 3 way alliance is possible. Arcean
A dark presence has decended over the galaxy. With the evilness of GROSS and the might of, well, small furry creatures, no one is safe any longer. The forces of good must join together or perish to the pirates, separately. (Congrads GROSS!)
My strategies. 1) Colony rush (no surprise) 2) Tech Whore 3) Get all early TGs 4) Tech Whore 5) Get to Dreadnaught 6) Removing the annoying civs: Alpha strike their important planets, let the rest flip culturally. 7) The nice civs (Civs that happen to not annoy me that game, usually the Torians), ally with them, trade with them. 8) Culture bomb. I don't do the get the one AI to attack the other AI bit. Depending on my game I am either un

I will also seriously consider a Drengin.net subscription, to say thanks. If I weren't so broke :( Maybe in a month or so.
I wish alliances in general are much stronger. I haven't seen many space stratgy games that had alliances worth anything, IMO. Allies in Galciv should be able to share resources, tech, money, etc. Currently I can't think of a good reason to ally with anyone unless you are looking for an alliance win. Disadvantages of alliances: 1) They drag you into wars 2) They kill your trade economy via #1 above. 3) Impossible to break (unless you attack them) 4) No benefit (
Vicible: I emailed it to you. The serial number is in game.galaxy, i hex edited it to remove it. Hopefully it should work. If not, you can add your own s/n and it should work. Anyway an after-action report. The early phase was described above. I left off at the point where the Arceans, Alterians, and Torians were in a three-way alliance, and the Drengins and Yor surrendered (to me). The galaxy looked somewhat like this: x x x x x x
My own $.02, I agree with Ares that we should not have to pay to become beta testers, as is the trend now in the industry. So I refuse to do it, and I will sit and wait to get a hold of the new expansion pack. But it's not like anyone is forcing us to pay $30 to get Drengin.net, and those who do know what they are getting into and are generally cheerful. I think if you don't want to pay to become a beta tester, then you shouldn't get drengin.net. And if you don't mind and want the latest ver
Supposedly the AI doesn't cheat. At the high intelligence levels (Genius and above) the AI gets influence and economic bonuses i believe. They are probably setting their economy to max and producing 50% or 100% military. If you do 100% military it only takes 10-14 turns to complete a constructor at the lowest levels. Anyway don't worry about resources too much in the early game. If you can grab a few that are within your sphere of influence, that would be great. But otherwise you won't hav
We're #1 rah rah rah :) :)
I won in July 2200. Only three majors survived. If I played the scenario over, i am sure i could do better (even given another random map). I don't play this type of diplomacy game well. Two minors did appear throughout the game but were quickly swallowed. Why oh why do they appear with 100 population, no money, and no ships? How can they expect to survive?
Yeah Pontius I completely agree, Stargate is great. Too bad you don't get cable, Every monday there is a 4 hour block of old Stargates, and the new one is every Friday. Just reminded me, I forgot to setup the VCR. I do that alot, so I only catch 1/2 of the new episodes. Hopefully they will release season 4 all together, instead of one DVD at a time.
Congrads on #1. Enjoy it while it lasts. :) Now that I am not of the GROSS empire, I think what we all need is more peace and love in the galaxy. I can see the day when members of MWC and GROSS waltz hand in hand to polka music, while sipping the sweetest of wines. Don't worry be happy everyone! MJ anyone? :)
Got this message from SamP at Gamespot. Gal Civ expansion story To follow up on your recent post to the Ask GameSpot forum about the Galactic Civilizations expansion, I wanted to let you know we put a story up on it today. It's here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/galacticcivilizations/news_6071861.html [Message Edited]
I see that the MWC is now #1. Congrads to them. Dunno if they have a chat thread here or not. I'm glad to see people not taking this so personally and defensively any more. Moving forward...
Thanks for the clarification Gengsta. I have seen what you have described. Generally I think in war it's harder to get the enemy AI to convert. But it is possible. I think the part about the alignment is true too, but seemingly if you are of simliiar alignment they will flip easier (because you'll have closer relations, i guess that is what you are saying).
WTG Gengsta. Well you already beat me. I can't do such a detailed AAR, anyway I've discussed most of my strategies on another thread. Basically my game went like this: Early Colonization phase: Did well with 2 research resources near the Sol sector, and managed to get 11 planets (I think). More than anyone else at any case. The early part of the game was very very smooth, I got all the early TGs built, and had a very nice economy thanks to trade and selling techs. I thought I wou
plephart: I fail to see how joining the MWC will help this player do better. Smoking won't make you cooler and hipper either. Just say no, its the right thing to do. He could read the updated manual and strategy guide (manual first, guide later), or browse some of the threads discussing newbie tactics. BTW i agree with all the advice given here, with the exception of joining the MWC. The manual is posted in the news part of the home page. The strategy guide is posted here: h
