Any plans for an official Galciv icon for ObjectDock, now that 1.0 is out? Someone had one up at Wincustomize (gone now) but it was not my cup of tea. By the way, anyone know how to get Galciv windowed to run from ObjectDock without crashing? Setting the path to Galciv.exe and adding the "w" in arguments doesn't work. I've been calling a batch file but the console window popping up is inelegant at best. Just wastin' your time, -Robert ~SDC~

Yrag, point taken, I should have read up on that issue in a little more depth. It may in fact be related, so I am re-installing 52.16 (Windows recently reloaded all the drivers when I had to move some cards around) to make sure I've got it and we'll see if it continues to re-occur. I'll try to grab a screen-capture of it happening. I want to reiterate however that this behavior only occurs when WindowBlinds is loaded, so I am assuming it is in some way WindowBlinds-related and not just
Thanks for the link, but actually "refresh rate" refers to an aspect of the physical video signal between the card and the monitor and doesn't have anything to do with software or the GUI. FYI, it has to do with how "solid" your display looks. If it seems video-y or shakes and shimmeys when you move your head or chew while you look at the screen, the refresh rate is too low (probably 60MHz). Raising your monitor's refresh rate to it's maximum will give your monitor a more "solid" look a
Not a bad idea but I don't happen to have one handy. But surely if it is the Nvidia card, someone else has seen it. I am just trying to determine if it is a known Nvidia hardware or software problem or a known problem with WindowBlinds that is likely to be fixed or something I can fix by changing settings somewhere. -Robert <A HREF="https://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?Cmd=full
While running WindowBlinds (XP, various versions of Nvidia drivers, it doesn't seem to matter, GeForce3, but it did it on a pre-GeForce Nvidia card too, I think), windows will occasionally redraw their borders a little bigger than normal, leaving a white border around the window contents, then seem to freeze up for a second or two, then "snap back" redrawing the borders at their correct sizes, except for the those occasions when, instead of the border snapping back, the contents expand into the
You know that you can now mess with the packet size under the "Connection" tab in the Tools>Settings menu? -Robert ~SDC~
Here's an oldie: A simple way to put a small number of people in a colony ship no matter what your system's population is. Say 100m. In fact, I've never used a colony ship to carry more than about 100-200 million people at a time. Is there some strategy I'm missing out on? -Robert ~SDC~
That should say " not really similar". -Robert ~SDC~
Wow, lot's of Tolkein in there
I had the same response to those couple of sentences! The elvish-sounding names are probably to blame, since the only parallel to the story of Illuvatar (and the Jehovah/Lucifer story) seems to be the one bad apple concept. There doesn't even seem to be a central figure since Telenath and Draginol don't sound like individuals on a closer reading, so it's probably really similar at all. Still, I eagerly await the GalCiv sequel, The G
Cari says she's fixed this for the next release. -Robert ~SDC~
Perhaps rather than banning culture flipping, war would just lower your influence with races with which you are at war. That of course might be painful for Stardock to do if they have to add per-race culture calculations to everything. To allow for Jane Fondas, the influence could be affected by the percentage of your Senate that is held by the Peace Party. And, if it is not already, the popularity of the peace party could be affected by the relative military strength of your opponent
The problem with the flag is two-fold--you might legitimately destroy a colony and, also legitimately, decide later in the game that you want that colony back for influence, range, whatever reasons. Also, another race might decide to colonize a planet you've abandoned and the flag would penalize them. Since most of the events would be unlikely to happen again in the intervening time, reducing the likelyhood of an event occurring after a planet's been colonized once would be a little more reasona
It can't hurt unless you're on a dialup. I was getting the double wonders after it was supposedly fixed and uninstalling, deleting everything in the GalCiv directory (after copying my saved games somewhere else) and reinstalling fixed that problem and who knows who else. I'll probably wait until 1.04 to do that again. -Robert ~SDC~
For some reason 57 let me upload an unsubmitted old game (that the previous version wouldn't let me), including the one that went up with a zero score as Difficulty: Anomalous, but that went up yet again as a zero score and Difficulty: Anomalous. Is it possible to just get those removed? -Robert ~SDC~
Hmmm. It won't load either of my previous 03-era saved games. Okay, the first one was started in 51 and finished in 54, but the last one was a pure 54 game. Darn, I didn't even submit that one. That's life. -Robert ~SDC~
It is absolutely a hard limit and has been since the game's inception. You will need to petition Brad to get it lifted. Since there are never more than 5 major alien races, you probably won't have much luck convinving him. In fact, I'm surprised that playing with fewer races doesn't lower the limit to something like twice the number of races you're playing against. -Robert ~SDC~
Keep in mind that when the Precursor event happens, it is going to (usually) happen to one of six players. That doesn't even mean that out of six games that the event occurs in that you are guaranteed to get it once. It may take many more games than that before you get it. Try rolling a die six times and see how often you get a one. Do that several times and you'll start to get an idea of the likelyhood of your getting the precursor event out of any number of games in which the event occurs (all
Increasing your influence will help. -Robert ~SDC~
You guys know that there is a star-system name file you can modify or replace? I'll leave its name and location an exercise for the reader. -Robert ~SDC~
I would disagree a little about class 13/14 planets being "death traps". I've successfully used them to extend range or to dispute an opponent's hold on a sparsly populated area. They're a lot more work to maintain and hang on to, but the strategic advantages are sometimes decisive. -Robert ~SDC~
I think some confusion may be about whether the version numbers "track". For instance, the windowed version now is 1.03.017. Since I've never seen an 1.03.017 non-windowed version, I have that little doubt that my assumption that the relative version numbers mean something is correct. So, to relieve my doubt, can I safely assume that the windowed version 1.03.017 is equivalent to the same internal build number for the non-windowed version, features and bug-wise? Thanks, <br
Just in case somebody takes an above post too seriously, in fact, shit (human or otherwise) is really not a good way to get botulism if you are really determined to. It is a good way to get all kinds of viral and bacterial infections and parasites from the shitter so if you're in the market for that, chomp away! But botulism is a disease caused by the ingestion of botulin toxin, which is produced by a particular anaerobic bacteria that cannot really get a hold in the human digestive system. In f
Keep in mind that Evilness/Goodness is NOT linked to behavior except to the extent that it is a factor in who a given race will declare war on, all other things being equal. A race can be 100% good and declare war at the drop of a hat, while an evil race might never declare war on anybody. The difference in military abilities is, I think, usually a lot more significant factor in war decisions. There are probably trade factors as well (I really need to read the manual someday--this is all probabl
Tricky! See guys, us diplomats only get to play *old* games 'cause we're always whining and complaining about bugs and stuff. LOL So once I finish my current game and upgrade, should I be e-mailing CTDs or posting them somewhere? -Robert ~SDC~
To clarify, I wasn't aware we were still getting later builds. I thought everybody was at 070. So Ambassadors, Governors, Senators and Avatars see later builds than me? Bummer! ;) TheFire, it has to do with beta testing. I've been testing since before release, found enough bugs to get in the gamma, etc. It's just a matter of remembering to run Smart Exception and reporting CTDs before everybody else does. I suck at the game. -Robert ~SDC~
