Hi, I have had an ongoing problem for years. Sometimes it goes away for a while if I do an update to fences but it always comes back. The behavior I expect is that icons in the "general" desktop population will not be able to exist under a fence. If I move the fence I expect the non-fence icons to move around to get out of the way. However, what happens (particularly after a crash of a game in an off-resolution or when the primary monitor becomes one with a lower resolution) i

Ok.. I ran the update again (twice again) and it doesnt have to download everything again.. picked up again with that file.. but it still bombs with the same order with every install. Is unease.mpop_ corrupt? Regards, Artuk ~SDC~
I got this message Extract File: D:\Galactic Civilizations\SDCentral\temp\Mod_Multimedia\Music\Unease.mp_ Result: Failed (deleted file) Installation aborted (failed) Unfortunate given how long it took to download. Regards, Artuk ~SDC~
I had another thread where I discussed it at length.. but the ones that have been a problem for me are: 1) The "evil planet" event that takes over a planet if you dont release it. This can be a real show stopper depending on which planet it is. 2) The event that buffs a civ and requires you to stomp another player immediately. Slower tech makes it very hard to prosecute a war of annihlation. 3) The uber-planet event.. given how few systems thre are on the map this on
Hi, I would like to be able to disable events (as an option) when playing on a tiny map. That wont solve the issues with high council events.. but it would be nice to play through a game without having it completely hosed by an event inappropriate for the map size. Back when I played moo2 on a tiny map I would always disable antaren attacks since those would completely screw every tiny map scenario in that game too. Regards, Artuk
My suggestion: Create moo2 style "catch all" builds that contribute to some aspect of the empire or planet: Housing: Increase population Research: Go directly toward research (maybe not 1:1) Economy: Go directly back into the economy (not 1:1) Intelligence: Contrinute directly to espionage Propoganda: Increase local influence Regards, Artuk ~SDC~
My issues are specific with tiny and small maps. These maps greatly exagerate the impact of the events. If you have not played on a small or tiny map I respectfully suggest you do before telling me how much more fun the game is with these events as they are. I have yet to complete a tiny map game without it being determined by an event, not by my actions. This is my underlying issue. I am a big fan of the computer version of "advanced civilization". In that game massive events sweep th
March 30, 2003: Tweaks, fixes, and events... Changes: + Some random events come later in the game. Hopefully this will alleviate the problem, but I fear if the date an event enters is not linked to map size, and some events restricted based on map size, it may not help the small map players enough. I also think that home worlds should be off limits on system stealing events on small and tiny maps. Regards, Artuk ~SDC~
Did you have any stations in the area? Yes.. a HUGE one that was destroyed by the generated ship. Military upgrades? Many many.. in fact it was a military resource starbase. On a small map its well worth one's while to enhance production in what few sectors you have a presence using a starbase. Did you have any ships guarding your planets? All ships at the system (most of my fleet) were booted off the system. I lost them all trying to retake it. Kee
Hi, I was playing on a small map.. had been at the game for a couple of hours. I had three systems.. one of which contained the vast majority of my top upgrades. I got a precursor event that took away the system and generated a giant star ship that wiped out everything I had. Oh yeah.. thats fun. Nothing like losing a game to a completely random event I cant control. I could do the same thing playing high low with a deck of cards and save $40. I am very frustrated.. go
I considered a farming planet to be one with a good environment but poor minerals. I guess it is a farming specialist by lacking anything better to be. Because you would want to industrialize the rich+ planets, you would want to use your poor worlds that supported farming (and had a lot of farming related infrastructure) in order to feed the workers on the other worlds. The need for farming planets is created by a desire to put all your population on rich+ planets onto production.
I play on a small map. This changes things greatly since you have a seriously abbreviated colonization period.. and because the map is smaller and their are less resources, the role of space stations is enhanced. As a result, while I colonize what I can get at quickly, I find its at least as important to get some constuctors built asap to get stations on resources in your sectors. If I can get two resources at the early stage of the game, I am doing VERY well for the small map. For tech
It took me a while to figure out how to avoid the -500 problem too. I was usually able to bail myself out using the spending option, but I also found it greatly helpful to form trade routes. This money comes in on top of everything else as pure profit and greatly enhanced my ability to bail myself out. As a result.. my standard start has included getting trade up asap. Conveniently, its on the same track as universal translator. Regards, Artuk ~SDC~
Planets in moo2 had differing ratings for industry, farming, and research.. it only made sense to specialize.. especially if you had captured species you could send to them that has bonuses. I think those of us who specialized planets would tend to play on smaller maps where the tuning an individual planet had more value vs the effort it took to implement it. I could certainly see how on the larger maps one wouldnt bother.. just too many systems to manage. On a tiny map it was critical to succes
Crash to desktop I think it is occuring during autosave. When I tried to load my latest autosave after the ctd the autosave was corrupt, came up with a messed up game screen and subsequent ctd. I would like to have much more info available from the research menus. I am surprised we cant in the release version, and spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to click on this stuff for info. 1) Allow us to click and find out what the various items on the advance give.. like the stats of new modules and buildings. Let us click on the technologies they unlock so we can see those. 2) Allow us to choose a technology or build and return the technologies we need to research
Thanks for the info! Regards, Artuk
Thanks! That explains it. The game looks fine as is anyhow. Regards, Artuk
Hi, After enabling the Hyperthreading option in the prefs.ini file.. each time I selected my survey ship and indicated a destination I would crash to desktop. With HT turned back off (in the prefs.ini, not on my system) I ran fine. This was with an existing savegame I had already run without ht enabled for quite a few turns.. dont know if that is a factor. p4 3.06, win xp, 1gb mem, e7205 chipset Regards, Artuk
Hi, The readme file lists different memory requirements for different resolutions up to 1280x1024.. is there a way to change the resolution the game runs at? Regards, Artuk
Ok, thanks. Sounds like I will be better off buying locally when I get a chance.
Hi, Will you have a less expensive download option if we dont desire to have the manual and cd shipped to us? I would be perfectly content printing the manual from a pdf and burning my own copy from the download. Regards, Artuk
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like they got 2 out of 3 of my concerns right. I guess I will just have to read about how the game feels tactically after release to see how the simplistic combat will work out. I am beggining to realize what a masterpiece moo2 truly was. Regards, Artuk
Hi, I have read through the manual you have online for galciv and it sounds pretty good. I have just a couple of questions about gameplay.. elements that I feel are missing in current offerings that I have enjoyed in older games. The manual is almost 6 months old.. if you have made very many changes, perhaps you should update it lest other folks like myself get a false impression of the game's content. Combat: The manual describes combat as a simple numeric co
