Here's a stumper. Recently got a new computer, one of those cheapo Dell dealies with Windows XP (hey, I'm a low-maintenance pragmatist at heart). I popped in my Galciv CD to install the puppy on my spankin' new machine and...BZZZZ! The load screen comes up, but when I click "install," it locks up and CD-R player-thing just kinda hums and groans like a cheap sex toy (er, never mind). Hmmm...this thread caught my attention 'cause my sound fx never worked from the get-go. I downloaded the codec thingie, reinstalled, defragged, sacrificed a goat, all to no avail; I chalked it up to my chintzy computer and just got used to playing with no sound. Then I tried Elad's suggestion -- starting from Stardock -- and voila! It worked. Cool. So, if you're in the same boat as I am, you might wanna try this.

Er...dunno if this is a bug or not, but sound won't work on my system. The music is fine, but I don't get any sound fx; odd thing is I can click 'em in the folder and they play fine. There's a bit of text in the GalCiv SFX folder that says, "Pear sound files (wavs) must be 16 bit mono unsigned at 22 kHz." Anyone know if this has anything to do with it? I uninstalled/reinstalled, installed Windows Media Player 9, diddled around with various settings...no dice. Anyone having a similar pro
