I have to say, the whole thing about not letting the computer get tech/alliance victories makes no sense to me. The whole appeal of GC is that the computer is on a level playing field with the human - no fake cheats, no secret code to give the computer super money or knowledge. Given that, why wreck the whole premise by preventing the computer from winning? Or why not just put another set of check boxes on the new game screen - mark each victory condition for both players and computers separatel

Isn't this just TradeWars? jason ~SDC~
You mean Stardock Central? It does -- see the discussion button at the top. That's how I'm posting this. jason ~SDC~
I think he means the small initial window (galciv.com, the survival guide, and what not). jason ~SDC~
I really cannot understand why the AI should not be able to get a tech win. If the AI beats you militarily, you lose. If the AI beats you culturally, you lose. If the AI beats you in an alliance, you lose. Why should tech be any different? What's the point of a tech "win" if the AI has already gotten that far? jason ~SDC~
You might have an early revision of 1.03. Get the latest one, it should fix the problem. jason ~SDC~
I think the fact that you play on a medium size galaxy skews that perception. The smaller the galaxy, the more the start postion matters. In larger galaxies, the distances tend to even out. jason ~SDC~
I have to agree with the rally points comment. The worst part about the end game for me is the over-micromanaging you have to do to get your fleets into position. jason ~SDC~

Just updated to 053. I was having the econ problem, so I updated and loaded my saved game (from 1.03). CTD right after I click OK from the initial status report. This has been reported a few times in the 1.03 bug thread. Post down there. jason ~SDC~
Slashclone, I'm afraid your way off. This issue has been addressed here before, and Brad made it clear that he has no problem with Linux. If you think for a second about Stardock's history, that they started out as an OS/2 ISV struggling to survive against OS/2's decline, you'll understand why they're hesitant to sink money into a (great) platform that has no guarantees of returning their investment. It would seem that if it's not working well with WineX, that's WineX's problem
Alabrent, don't forget to register with the Metaverse, using the same name as your submitted under. Click on "register your player" on the metaverse list. jason ~SDC~
I'm having the weirdest problem: the economic screen is miscalculating my income. It claims I'm making hundreds of credits a turn, but my account only goes up a few credits. When I set it to make only a few credits, I go into huge debt. jason ~SDC~
Just hover your mouse pointer over them.... jason ~SDC~
Agreed with Codemonkey: search, edit, quote. jason ~SDC~
Agreed about TA. What's the story about Cavedog, anyway? jason ~SDC~
They're referring to when you set a planet build queue to empty (either military or social). The planet's production basically goes into the bit bucket. jason ~SDC~
I just had the exact same problem. Drengins offered me tech, I accepted, crash. I'll install smart exceptions as well. jason ~SDC~
I don't see any info in SDC on the new windowed version. Is there a plan to let it work with >16bit color desktop? jason ~SDC~
One more thing: there's no scoll bar on the tech screen. Makes it hard to get through long lists. As a suggestion, there should be a value for techs in the negotiation screen, so you don't overpay for the techs you need. jason ~SDC~
A few minor incidents: 1. Random events are repeating. In my current game, I've seen the "alien race has business meeting crashed by assassins, declares war on you" event three times, all with the Dregens. 2. Aliens will trade you tech that you do not have the prereqs for 3. Aliens seem to value defense techs much, much more than other techs of the same level. This may be intentional for all I know. jason ~SDC~
Ah, that would explain it. Looks like it's time to get back to the basics. :) ~SDC~
Maybe I missed this in the manual, but every time I invade an enemy planet, my treasury goes HUGELY into debt (so much so that it takes several turns of no production to get out!). What's the rationale for this? jason ~SDC~
