Well, as has been the case throughout the project, GPG blamed GPG's code for the problem and Stardock blamed Stardock's code for it. I still think it was our fault. :)

The tournament will be until around April 7 which is when we turn off the beta completely (won't be able to be played).
I am curious now, since you guys are obviously the people to ask having done all this networking stuff. I have been running DD-WRT for quite a while, and it is very good, but the router itself still has rather rubbish hardware. As a result it will fall over in certain circumstances - basically it can't cope with the hundreds or even thousands of connections that peer-to-peer downloading software creates. My solution at the moment is to temporarily ban the person whose light is flashing
I have a theory that this is related to the game trying to update the server and not getting a response. Will check into it.
I guess that, in that case, you could post a list of tested/recommended routers, just for reference. I have a DLink DI-524 and I have no idea if you would consider it new, old, or crappy. Another question is: if I manage to open the appropriate ports in a given router, even an old, crappy router should work, or not? Thanks...
Not necessarily. It's not just about
I don't think the balance in the current public beta is that great. Some Demigods are simply purely inferior to others and others are too easy to dominate. It's something GPG is working on. There are also items and spells that have unintended consequences (i.e. seemed like a good idea on paper at that price).
Demigod Beta 3E: Balance: 6/10 Connectivity: 4/10 (Custom Games) Gameplay (fun): 10/10 (when playing with friends), 7/10 (when playing with strangers) Community features: 3/10. AI: 5/10 Visuals: 10/10 (best looking strategy game I've ever seen) ... Where I'd expect the final version: Balance: 9/10 (though it's going to be close on some of the tweaks) Connectivity: 9
It is still misleading, though.
It has nothing to do with us, however. There is no money changing hands.
I find this slightly misleading, though perhaps I am misinformed about how this works. From everything I have read on GOO, it's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) that there is still a central activation database that is maintained by a single company. In the past, this activation database was maintained by the distributor. With GOO, that database is now maintained by the developer or the publisher. This means that the problem of "company X goes out of b
Exactly. On Stardock games you buy at retail, we put nothing on it. There's no copy protection. No DRM, nothing. The idea there is that there are plenty of people who don't have Internet connections. People should be able to go to the store, buy their game, take it home, install it and not have to worry. But... If they want to get updates, well obviously we need to make sure the person actually bought the game. Otherwise, we have to jump thro
I happen to be one of those people who don't think graphics should matter much. It's gameplay for me. As long as the graphics aren't distracting. I think people will find that Demigod and LOL are sufficiently different enough that there will be fans of both who play both. It need not be a Master of Orion vs. Galactic Civilizations type scenario. I love Master of Orion 1/2 and me liking MOO took nothing away from GalCiv. Speaking personally, one of the thing
I'll be talking to GPG about observers. I don't think they'll make it into day 0 but we do know they're important for competitive play.
I won't speak for everyone here but ideally when I'm in the lobby for a game I want to find out whether someone is a chronic disconnector. The problem with people who don't finish games is that they're harming the other players with them. Dealing with disconnecting is something that you'll find we consider a big deal. In June we're going to be releasing something that does more advanced match making than what we have today that will really tak
For day 0 we're trying to be pretty conservative. We have a year's worth of updates roughly planned so we'll have plenty of opportunity tweak that sort of thing based on player feedback.
My objective here really is to make the game able to play Demigod so that my sons can play with me online. So turning it into a storage unit wouldn't work out there unfortunately.
1. Yes. There is both a single player skirmish as well as a single player tournament against AI players. 2. I'm not the right one to answer that one but I would say GPG has made Demigod more newbie friendly than any Stardock game made previously. 3. The single player tournament is like a campaign but it isn't really story driven since the story is so straight forward (win favor points to ascend to the pantheon of the gods). 4. You'll want to have a system with at
I think the question is whether IRONCLAD will be the next Blizzard. They are the ones who developed it. And I think Ironclad is definitely becoming a major force in RTSs.
Yea, I agree with you. We'll put it on the list.
They have frequently said SD is not and will never be up for sale. The lack of stockholders means that not even a proxy war would work. And if MS tried muscling them into anything they would probably sue M$ and win (since just about anyone would believe it if M$ got in trouble for monopolizing again ).
Never say never. The problem with someone wanting to acquire Stardock is that they'd have to pay so much more than Stardock is worth because there
Gotta give credit where credit is due. :)
Why not just have the AI have a rank? Let the rating system push them down nice and low to where they should be (probably in the low 100s).
That's the plan. It just hasn't been implemented.
One of the objectives of Goo is to make it so that ANY digital distributor that supports the game can activate the game rather than just one source. I.e. if I buy Game X from place Digital Distributor Y and they go out of business I can still get support from Steam, Impulse, GamersGate, Direct2Drive, etc. The people who are yelling about Goo and saying "But what happens if X has gone out of business" haven't read up on Goo. Same as the people who are yelling about "but DRM kee
You're correct, tech. GPGNet had a lot of great features but it also required GPG, the developer, to maintain a pretty significant infrastructure that was only used in their own games. Impulse is being expanded to support everything that has been discussed in this thread (and more, Voice over IP, notifications from clan members, friends, etc.) all as an overlay. It's too timely and expensive for developers to do that kind of thing on a per game basis.
And as a reminder: No matter what changes we do, no one will ever be fully satisfied with balance... <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eFjbGi0x3kg&hl=en&fs=1" allowscriptaccess="al
Experience is the ELO rating right now. It's still being tweaked on how to handle victories against AI players since the AI players aren't yet rated.
