First, thanks for the numerous improvement on diplomacy during the game. But beta 5 stills exhibits a strange behaviour, allowing this cheesy tactic. Start a game with Populist party and maxed diplomacy bonus, research some techs giving diplomatic bonus, and colonize a few planets. When you meet the first alien civ, you should have enough diplomatic bonus to trade 3 of your planets with 4 of their. Wash, rince, repeat until the civ is left with one world. Find the next alien civ, and use the sa

Javascout : how long did your victory take ? I tried to betatest this victory, but I won by influence before I could research beyond human. At the end of the game, I had a reasonably successful empire, and I had 331 month left for this tech. Is this normal ? I may have not developped my empire enough but I thought I had developped all the tech improving building.

You can colonize multiple planets in a solar system. Both the player and the AI do it routinely. Perhaps your problem with Earth is a bug, perhaps the loss of production is due to another factor. How many colonists did your transfer ? Are there enough left on Earth ? Or enough on the 2nd planet ? When you click on the Earth system, you can access the view of the system, and click on the different planets in this list, where you should see both Earth and Sol N

Exodius : actually, you did pay for beta testing the game, as the game is not out yet. You may be running into a bug. How can it be considered as strange, as beta test is obviously the period where bug are corrected ? I hope SD will correct the bug that prevent you from dl in the next few monthes. Thank you for participating.

Mmmm, I suppose that the planet class affect the max population, and that morale is reduced as the population reaches the cap. Just a guess, but the initial morale of a colony (without any improvement at all) change with the population, and start decreasing when it become more populated. The growth is probably a % of the total pop, but I'm not sure, as I saw a colony gained through UP (planet mine with 0 pop) slowly gain population...

I definitely had revolution happen in 3A. I remember two civs break from a major alien to form a new minor. Regarding this, I'd like to point that I *think* that they start as a "new" civ, without the tech of their parent civ. I think so, because I could instantly buy the new minor in exchange of all my tech...

Yes yes yes, more power to the UP ! I'm sure the number of events is sheduled to grow, but I'd really like the diplomatic phase of the game to be expanded. As it is now, the UP is a sugar icing, nice but not vital. Most of the diplomacy is done on a bilateral level, with treaties only influencing people taking an active part in them. A more multilateral diplomacy would really be a plus.

On #1 : AI is too easy to bankrupt anyway. We'll have to wait for the improved AI. But right now, I found that the best mix is to Destabilize to the max one alien civ. With all its planets with 1 morale, it is soon past the point of bankruptcy. Repeat with the next civ. On #2 : I may be wrong, but here's my impression : the AI of the minor race is not very keen on building anti-cultural improvements. To prevent the minor neighbours to be culturally captured very soon by the player

After buying the Arcean out of all his land in exchange of a few European trinkets, err, I meant my very advanced trade goods.. Well, anyway, they were wiped out. And a large number of turn after that, I learnt that they had undergone a revolution, and a Free Arcean group had emerged. They probably shared in half the zero planet they had left. Perhaps such "split event" should not happen to dead civs :))

The UI is fine, but I find the "neutral" UI the most intuitive. The evil and good UI are not as clear, but it is not a problem, since players will be used to the position of the buttons by then.

How exactly do you "plan" for an UP meeting ? I understand how you can plan for an election, buy reuducing tax rate, creating social building right in time for the vote, but the UP ? Am I missing something ? We have a one month warning in the event windows, enough to trade influence points with other civs.

Both point of view can be defended, I think. When you research reinforced hull, you only research the materials to make them, you do not invest them to outfit every ship (which is done slowly, as they are repaired).

AlexG : as a cheesehunter, you'll probably be interested by the following idea : follow an enemy colony ship with your colony ship. As the AI know where to go, you'll find a good planet. And team with a cheap scout to stand in the square in front of the enemy colony ship to delay it while you cruise to the planet. Is it necessary for the game to forbid ships from different civs to stack ? After all, a parsec cube is large enough for to colony ships to fit...

21 Replies 449 Views

Speaking of colony ships, doesn't the AI build too many of them ? After the initial race for territory, that quickly ends when every 15+ planet is occupied, I feel the AI is still building colony ships. Often I see alien planets with more population orbiting in 5+ colony ships than on the land :) I just wanted to point out that since the AI knows where the planets are, they could calculate how many ships they will *ever* need.

31 Replies 431 Views

Regarding colonization events, I love them. Really. Not because of the bonus they provide, but because they give the feel of exploration, sending your ships to establish a colony "in the unknown". I would love to see more of them, perhaps some that would not give too many bonuses...

I'm looking forward to a better AI. As it is know, I think the computer players have a hard time, especially since their initial population has been reduced. I think (but I will test that) that independantly of the AI, a player that put 100% into production of colony ships can get a major lead very early... and the gap only widen thereafter. BTW, great geat game (I don't think I had the opportunity to say it, as it is just obvious :D )

The AI is not very good at bargaining, for now. I see that everyone is focussed on the weakness of buying colony ships. For fun, I tried to play Pacifist with all my points in Diplomacy, and started to research Diplomacy improving techs. I started to concentrate on my tech, without resorting to buying colony ships. I gained a comfortable edge, then proceeded to trade them all versus a Drengin planet, an Arcean planet, etc. Soon, I had enough ressources to buy the love mushrooms and get

I think the trading of colony ships should still be allowed, even though the AI seems to undervalue them, especially as they are reaching their destination. This is very true for colony ships, but also for other, regular ships. A ship near the battlefield is more useful than a fleet at the other end of the universe. If this can't be taken into account, perhaps the trading of ships could imply their auto delivery in the home system of the buyer. So you could still trade ships, even colo

The computer will not colonize planets with less than 15 quality, and for a good reason : morale will drop very low if you do. In the beginning of the game, shoot for 15+ planets, as quickly as possible. The AI knows where they are, so you must hurry to grab the one available. Do not hesitate to build a little fleet of colony ship ASAP, and buy colony ships of alien civ if you see them approaching a good planet. However, if you spot some very influent planet, in the 13-14 range, it may
