I agree with Admiral Rom; GalCiv is wonderful because it is a game of simplicity. Simply not spending money on an empty queue is the most natural choice. It is what I always assumed was happening. ~SDC~

T-man: Actually, you need to add four servers to Prox's "Bypass List.txt" to get Stardock Central to work. The appropriate lines from my config are: [^/]++sdcentral.stardock.com/ [^/]++sdcentral2.stardock.com/ [^/]++galciv.com/ [^/]++wincustomize.com/ Only after adding all four does Stardock Central work correctly with Prox turned on. You may wish to update your FAQ with this information. Also, is there any progress on the SDC proxy configuration bug?
It for sure is fixed. ~SDC~
Isn't the latest official Detonator release 41.09? That's what I'm using -- and what's available for download at nvidia.com -- and I have no problems with the mouse cursor. Anyhow, something to try. ~SDC~
If you configure SDC in Tools->Settings->Connection to not use a proxy server, it uses the proxy server IE is configured to use anyhow; in other words you still must disable Proximotron to use Stardock Central. russelmz2, you can right-click on the Prox icon in the toolbox and choose "Bypass" to temporarily bypass Prox. The icon will dim, and SDC will work. Just deselct bypass before you resume browsing the web. ~SDC~
T-Man -- Yes, I know Prox interferes with things. That is why I configured Stardock Central to NOT USE THE PROXY SERVER. In Tools->Setttings->Connection, there is nothing listed in the Proxy section, therefore no proxy should be used. However, Stardock Central uses the proxy configured in Internet Explorer's settings anyhow. (One guess is that SDC is not overriding the proxy settings in the IE control properly.) So, in this case, this is an SDC issue. ~SDC~
Even though I have no proxy information entered into the Stardock Central configuration, it still attempts to connect via the proxy server configured in Internet Explorer. This is bad and wrong and is one cause of the "Your stardock.net account has failed to log in" error. When I turned off the proxy (Proximotron) then I was able to log in. Of course, GalCiv was downloading at 1.35K/s. Thanks, but I think I'll just wait about a week and see how the speed is then.
It happened again, using the latest Drengin build. Here is a SmartException log for a crash I recently had. It happened when I went into the minor race screen and clicked on the top race's icon to talk to them to extort... er, I mean, see if they wanted to pay some reasonable rate for my new trade good. As soon as I clicked the game crashed to the desktop. Oh, this is in Brad's Saturday build of 3D. Yes, I understand -- but that message is less than useful. Even if the route is one of my routes, it should probably say what planets it was between.
It might be useful to have a sorting function on the "choose a tech" part of the research screen, like the one on the planet and ship lists. That way, you could sort the available techs by cost, by name, by type and so on. I'm forever clicking through the list to find the cheapest technologies, things I might have missed. Right now they seem to be in a semi-random order...
In the 3 games I've played on beta 3D, I've noticed the AI going crazy building freighters. The freighters just swarm around, though; it seems as if they build more than they can have trade routes, fly to a planet, can't establish a trade route, and so fly to another planet. In my last game, I counted nine Bradian A.I. freighters just in my home system! The minimap was covered in little grey dots.
Just little stuff. On the planet list, Morale is misspelled Moral. On the ship list, it no longer shows you what a ship is doing. This was useful info, especially in a constructor building spree, where it's easy to leave one behind in orbit and not realize it for a while. I got a message saying that the corporate sponsors of trade route 0 had disbanded it because of the dangers of war. 0? I can't easily tell the difference between the orange minor civilization
No, Steevodeevo -- I mean you click "Domestic Policy", change a slider, click "Done" and then immediately click "Domestic Policy" again, with no time passing in-game between looks at the screen. It seems as if the first click on the arrow for either the taxation level or spending level slider isn't calculated, and the following ones are off, sometimes by large amounts.
On another Metaverse topic -- how is the high score shown on the top 100 table calculated?
I just won a game totally by accident because of automatic alliances. I wasn't paying attention -- allied to two of three remaining major civs -- the Bradian A.I. took out the one I wasn't allied with -- and poof! I won! I wouldn't mind, if that's what I was trying to do...
There needs to be more information about what's going on in the universe -- in my last game, the Bradian A.I. totally crushed the Drengin Empire, took over all of their planets, and I didn't even notice until long after it had happened.
No, they don't calculate better; you can many times go in, move the sliders, look at the result, leave the screen, come back and the results are different.
Wait... so if I have 10 ships attached to a flagship, and they attack a planet or another ship, there's only one attack from the strongest ship, whereas if I have a stack of 10 ships, they can all have a chance to attack? That doesn't sound very useful to me...
The minor races pretty much took over the game I was playing too... me with 5 planets, the Drengin with 1, Scottlingas with 1, Alexians with 12, and the Bradian A.I. with 4 -- and some very powerful warships!
Okay, I think this one was my fault. I somehow missed the line in the docs that explained that money stops being spent if you reach a deficit of 500 bc. Might I suggest some sort of event screen when this happens? Otherwise, things just ... stop.
I had a rebellion earlier today -- except that none of my three planets actually rebelled. I got 9999 BC and Earth's population was reduced by about 90%, 1.2b -> 140m, but there was no sign of the supposed "Terran Confederacy". Is that how it's supposed to work?
Okay, it just happened to me again in a different game: all three of my planets in a tiny galaxy were at "no resources". Earth, with 1.3B inhabitants, had been building at 7/7/1, and suddenly had none; the second planet, slowly growing since I got environment enhancements, was building at an unknown rate; the third wasn't building at all. I saved, quit the game, and reloaded, and production was back -- and the planet that had never had any resources was suddenly producing at 1/1/0.
There are almost 600M inhabitants left on Earth. All my planets (even the biggest one, Sobek-Re, with 4.2B inhabitants) now has no resources, just one lone research icon for the ones that have a research base. Does that make sense? I don't want to rule out that it's something rule related I don't understand... but it sure doesn't seem so.
...I managed to colonize two planets in the Sol system. I didn't get a "Colonize" cursor when I did it, and the docs are unclear on whether or not you're supposed to do this. The second planet had no resources (oops) and so couldn't build anything. The problem is, most of the time I select Earth now, the game thinks Earth has no resources, cannot build anything, and so on. I don't think I'm getting Earth's income either...
