Alliances: Unfortunately Gibbie, the only way to break an alliance is to ally with the 3 and then somehow get one of them to declare war on you. The other races in the alliance will either join you, join you opponent, or sit on the sidelines and wait to see who wins. Of course, this is all a moot point in your case since if you join the other races in their allinace you would win the game in an alliance victory. Tactics: As for you particular situation, I would suggest somethi

The top 10 might be a little tough to break in to, but even minors can get into the top 20 with 1 or 2 relatively high scoring players (I used to have a 1 person empire in the top 20 before I went to the MWC). The top 5 major empires are probably set, but don't give up! The more empires the better. BTW nice site.
GamingHyena,Thanks. The age of one-man empires have passed and it would take a least 2-3 top players just to crack into Top 10.Why don't you consider joining one of the bigger theme empires? It's not just the competition, it's also the comaradarie with other gamers. The doors of the Fellowship are open to you.
How do I join?
Way to go Ray. Although it is slightly discouraging to those of us 1 person empires that even the top scoring player on Metaverse could not be in the top 10 empires if he broke away from the Fellowship and formed his own personal empire : (
Although the game may seem tough at first Siders, I advise you not to give up. I too had trouble with the game when I first got it but with the right strategies you can be successful (my first Metaverse submission is on "Beginner" and now I'm on "Masochistic"). Here's some tips to help you out. Before you start... 1). My first piece of advice is to register the game and make sure you have the most recent version (which is v1.05 unless you bought the drengin.net package. The versi
Large empires, bah! The real test of skill in this universe is individual combat, not bunching together like sheep. Form your own individual empires, and the sweet taste of victory will be all your own.
The basic premise of the idea is that the computer will pay more money total for a little cash over time than a lot at once. You can easily test this yourself by trading a tech with a race. For example, say that the Alexians will pay 100bc for 0 turns (this means that you get 100bc up front) for diplomacy. However, by adjusting the slider you find they will pay 10bc for 12 turns for diplomacy. Since 10x12=120, you make more this way than if you got your cash up front. Plus, the Alexians wi
Another source of funding for me is "leasing" trade goods and technology to minors and weak majors. Since the computer does not look at long term cash projection, you can oftentimes get them to sign for a small amount of money over a long period of time. Do this a few times and you can add a huge drag on their economy as they sink farther and farther into debt (it's the same thing that happens whenever you lease too many projects at once). Remember that the computer plays (usually) by the sam
As a fellow warmonger, I usually use pretty much the same tech path for early games that you do. My only difference is that I usually go for photons - corvette technology after phasers and then go for communications theory - universal transmitter. The reason for this is that I can get corvettes out of the way while still going through my 1000bc starting reserve, and that the AI highly values it and I can use it as a bargaining chip in diplomacy. Plus I can immediately switch all my starfighte
I enjoy a more balanced approach to my games. I use the Industrialists party (+20 to Military and Social Production), +20 Economics, +20 Research, and +50 Diplomacy.
One tactic I find to be very useful is to trade obsolete ships for technology. Whenever I research a new type of ship, I usually replace my fleets with the newer ship type. This leaves a lot of older ships sitting around taking up money to maintain. I used to just disband the ships, but now I rename them something to distinguish them from my useful ships for the diplomacy screen (I usually rename them "lend lease") and give/sell the ships to a friendly neighbor. Not only do other r
Alliances become more useful to you the farther you fall behind the other races. I will often attempt to ally with a race both to serve as a counterbalance against other races and to ensure that I will not be attacked by my ally (or at least I've never been betrayed by an ally AI). Since the game does not give you the option of signing a non-agression pact, an alliance is the only sure way to make certain you won't go to war with someone. Just make sure to choose carefully who you sign an all
