Reply to Demigod vs DOTA in Demigod
Brad, I've been in numerous stardock betas...From Galciv ones to Sins... I agree that giving a resounding "No Good" verdict to a game still in development is unfair, which is why I personally am still waiting for the patch update due tomorrow and for future updates. However, being as we are now roughly 3 months away from release, SOME kind of opinion has to be formed ... If we are still in a "Engine test + connectivity" stage, then boy do

Sandbox mode only exists in the betas. There won't be a sandbox mode in the final game. It's mainly there just to mess with.

The Elemental beta begins this June and the game won't be released until the following February. And you can be assured, the beta for Elemental will be a LOOTTT rougher than Beta 1 of Demigod. The whole point is to have the final released game have the same benefit that usually doesn't show up in most games until well after release. Games are an interative process to develop. Getting feedback and suggestions makes for a better game. The earlier, the better.
Will these new modes be released in the thursday (ETA) multiplayer patch? Looking forward to trying them out... -Drexion
Yes. The other modes will be in but I don't think that the flag placement based on mode will be in. My favorite two modes so far are fortress and slaughter. Capture the flag is in there too (literally run to the other side, get the flag and bring it back to base)

(slaps forehead) Note to self not to let some of you guys participate in future Stardock betas. In the GalCiv betas, I remember expressly talking about how unfun the first couple betas were. There's still probably some posts somewhere. Same for Sins of a Solar Empire. In both cases, the games, to be candid, sucked up until the last month or two of development. Even Sins Entrenchment (BETA), IMO, is NOT fun because of little things like the mines and

Getting on the plane to head back. Net code continues to improve. Right now, the reliability is much better but the performance of connection time -- that is, how long it takes from clicking on a game to connect and actually getting into the game lobby -- is still terrible (think 90 seconds). There's a pretty good chance that the Thursday build will still be pretty slow when it comes to actually connecting but that it will be much more reliable in actually working

One of the things to bear in mind is that Demigod now has multiple game modes. So for instance, in Slaughter, there will be few flags on a map because the focus is just killing other Demigods. We're working on that today actually, not sure what will make it into tomorrow's beta.

The net code is improving radically. BUT... We're still quite unhappy with it. First, the connection times are way too long. That's what tomororw is going to be focused on by the net team. It can take a good minute for it to connect to another player and people aren't that patient. Secondly there's still funky stuff. I would say that in Beta 2, the net code worked 20% of the time. In beta 2A it'll probably be up to 70% of the time. By beta 2

Just a head's up that we are reading through the comments and taking ideas presented here. They may not manifest themselves in the game exactly as mentioned here but I think you'll be able to see how the discussions influenced how generals have been implemented in upcoming builds.

The biggest challenge Impulse faces right now is backlog. Right now, there are hundreds of games in the queue to put up but we can only get a few up per week due to the complexity of installers and such. We're working on something called MyImpulse that will greatly streamline this. In the long term, Impulse and Steam will have pretty much the same content. Publishers, like most users don't want to trade a Wal Mart monopoly to a Steam monopoly

I know they're still hoping for tomorrow. I'm currently out at CES so it's almost midnight back Michigan time. They were testing out new net code though and depending on how that went we'll either have a beta tomorrow, Friday, or early next week.

User manual credits updated: Gnats3 now in user manual. I plan to use real names in the manual unless there are objections (Nick T.. for Gnats3)

I like the idea of war score which is generated through controlling flags being combined with gold which is generated by killing creeps and Demigods. I am not a partciular fan of gold mines or of being able to increase gold output.

I wouldn't count on it getting a lot faster though. It already runs remarkably well on lower end hardware. If you want to know what really kills performance it's the shadows and anti-aliasing. Turn those down and you will probably find it runs best. I suspect in competitive play, people will play with everything turned down to the minimum but not for performance reasons (try it and you'll see what I mean). ;)

The "right people" read the forums, participate in the forums. :) First, I think the side that collects the most money and holds the most flags should win. Period. But only in the sense that gaining that money and controlling those flags should require considerable player skill in the first place and then considerable wisdom in making use of the money and war points and advantages that flags and money provide. Now, this part of the game is the most fluid right now as w

I'm starting to write it during the holidays. I plan to post drafts of it here for comment by beta testers.
Simply making a Flag that increases War Rank the same way a goldmine increases gold would be an easy variant. Then both sides have something to fight over, that will give a real advantage that isn't instant, but builds the longer you can hold the flag. There would have to be some automatic War Rank build though - someone modeled those Giants, we want to see them more often. Plus, the moment Catapultasaurii (love that word) hit the
